International Conference and the Launch of a Collaborative Exhibition: Science, Humanism, and the Making of Modern India – A months-long initiative by the Botanical Survey of India, Indian Museum Kolkata, Centre for World Environmental History (University of Sussex, UK), UK Research and Innovation, and John Innes Centre, UK.”

This exhibition explores a lesser-known yet pivotal era in scientific history, highlighting the dynamic interdisciplinary debates of the mid-20th century across genetics, cytology, botany, and eugenics.

At its core, the exhibition examines the unique scientific networks that emerged between Britain and India, showcasing the contributions of often-overlooked Western-trained scientists from colonial regions—most notably, pioneering Indian cytologist Dr. E.K. Janaki Ammal.

Through this lens, we delve into the broader scientific landscape of the time, shedding light on how race, gender, and indigenous knowledge influenced cross-cultural scientific exchange. By uncovering these hidden narratives, this exhibition redefines the intersection of science and colonialism, revealing the untold stories of those who shaped the boundaries of knowledge.
