Batik Workshop in Rajat Jubilee Village: Empowering Communities

In January 2025, a batik workshop was held in Rajat Jubilee village, Chhoto Mollakhali Island, to support the children of widows affected by tiger attacks and provide alternative livelihood opportunities. Building on the success of the Bali Island initiative in May 2024, this workshop was organized in response to community requests, offering a sustainable means of income generation.

During the workshop, participants successfully sold 30 handmade batik scarves and took their first steps toward learning saree creation, expanding their skills for future economic opportunities. Beyond skill development, the session also fostered discussions on the impact of climate change on local livelihoods, ecosystems, and biodiversity, reinforcing the connection between environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Expressing Stories Through Art

Participants brought their narratives to life by visually expressing their stories through drawings on cotton fabric. This creative process allowed them to share personal experiences, cultural heritage, and reflections on climate change, transforming fabric into a canvas of storytelling and resilience.

Preserving Designs with Wax Application

Molten wax was carefully applied to specific areas of the drawings on cotton fabric, ensuring that the white spaces were preserved before the dyeing process. This technique played a crucial role in creating intricate batik patterns, allowing participants to bring their artistic visions to life.

Bringing Color to Life: The First Dyeing Process

After the wax application, the fabric was carefully dipped into the first dye bath. This step allowed the colors to seep into the unwaxed areas, gradually bringing the batik designs to life while preserving the protected sections for intricate patterns.

Layering Colors: Waxing for Protection

To preserve the yellow areas, molten wax was carefully applied before immersing the fabric in additional dye baths. This layering technique ensured that each color remained distinct, enhancing the depth and complexity of the batik design.

The Final Touch: Applying the Last Dye

In the final stage of the batik process, the fabric was immersed in the last dye bath, adding the finishing layer of color. This step brought depth and vibrancy to the design, completing the intricate patterns created through the waxing and dyeing process.
